ABOUT JOE

Joe Clayton is a long-time leader in the electronics recycling and reuse industry.  An original member of IAER, he was instrumental in the acquisition by ISRI and creation of both the Electronics Division and Plastic Division of ISRI.  As Chair of ISRI Electronics Division, Joe led the creation and funding of R2 Solutions (the initial housing body of R2, which evolved into SERI) and the widespread acceptance and requirements of the R2 standard globally.  He sat on the R2 TAC for the initial 2 terms and was one of the primary forces in the creation of R2 2013.  Joe has worked in various capacities throughout the industry, from Government official developing County and Statewide programs for collection and recycling of end of life and surplus electronics, to business owner with state-of-the-art shredding and post shredder sortation technologies.  In 2013 Joe decided to branch out from pure recycling and trained himself on reuse issues, procedures and values.

Prior to entering the Electronics recycling and reuse space Joe was a student and professor of Environmental Politics and Economics at various universities.  Dissertation research (1989) was Climate Change where he developed a Rational Choice / Game Theoretical model to predict when and under what circumstances countries would implement Climate Change Policies.  His outcomes were very similar to the Paris Agreement 2015.  Joe is on Board of Directors of various recycling and ITAD companies where he mentors young professionals in the recycling space.  He has taught classes and seminars at local universities and authored many articles for the trade journals since entering the Electronics space and wrote peer reviewed articles and book chapters on recycling and the politics of landfills in academia.
